The Fifth International ADR Mooting Competition was successfully held at the City University of Hong Kong from July 27 to August 2, 2014.

CIETAC once again cooperated closely with the City University of Hong Kong, the Columbia University of America and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific to hold this Competition. The case of the Competition is based on CIETAC’s practical cases, and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is adopted as the applicable law. The case is referred to CIETAC Hong Kong Arbitration Center for arbitration and applies CIETAC Arbitration Rules. All this demonstrates the idea that the Competition is to be carried out by combining field experience acquired by arbitration institutions and theoretical research by colleges and universities. The event is participated in by 24 delegations coming from 11 countries including China, Australia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore and Britain, as well as Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan Region. Rimsky Yuen, Secretary for Justice of Hong Kong, Prof. Arthur Ellis from City University of Hong Kong extended congratulatory speeches at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Yu Jianlong, Vice-chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC pointed out in his congratulatory letter that as an important means to settle disputes besides litigation, alternative dispute resolution, or ADR for short, is being widely recognized by the general public and the legal profession nowadays. This Competition provides a broad platform on which, through extensive cooperation and exchange of opinions, college and university students with different legal backgrounds acquired a profound understanding of the theories and practical skills concerning ADR, thus making it possible to enhance the capability of all the participating team members in solving practical problems. Therefore, we’re fully convinced that the competition this time jointly launched by the four institutions including CIETAC is bound to produce far-reaching influence on ADR’s future development.

CIETAC’s staff members took part in the preparation and organization of the event and played the role as judges in some of the contests, and Mr.Tang Houzhi, honorary consultant and arbitrator from CIETAC, acted as the judge for finals.
